We are experiencing a world in upheaval. 80 years after the victory over German fascism in Europe, all signs around the world point to another major war. It seems as if the rise of fascist forces on the one hand and a deepening political and economic crisis on the other are increasingly converging.  In June 2025, we are hosting an International Marxist Conference to discuss whether fascism is back in Europe. Non-capitalist development in Africa and Asia – Lessons from the 20th century

This lecture revisits the theory of “non-capitalist development” that was formulated in socialist scholarship during the 20th century and highlights some concrete experiences in countries such as Mali, Congo-Brazzaville, Afghanistan, and Syria. When exploring both the successes and limitations of this strategy, we discuss how the collapse of the “Eastern bloc” in 1989 and the subsequent rise of China have influenced the prospects of independent development in the former colonies today.
